The Need for Process Automation

SHARE

Are you benefiting from the competitive advantages of engineering process automation?

Our lives continue to change at an unprecedented pace, as decades of rapid technology acceleration continue to change, the way we work and our customers’ expectations.

This is most well evidenced in the accelerating computerisation, digitisation and automation of business processes. This trend, also known as Digital Transformation, promises to enable better services, new products, and improved customer value, along with the ability for businesses to react to, and capitalise on, customer demands faster, more accurately and with less waste.

This all sounds too good to be true. What company would want to miss out on these opportunities?

The challenge is, however, that Digital Transformation can seem overwhelmingly complex and risky, impacting the entire business, with so many options and so many questions:

  • What do I need to buy?
  • How much is it going to cost?
  • What is my return on investment?
  • How do I choose from all the different options?
  • Will it work?
  • Will my team be able to use it efficiently?
  • What happens if it goes wrong?
  • Will I need to do it all again in a couple of years?
  • Where do I start?

Supporting this, research from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts identifies that lack of knowledge and know-how, perceived security risks and uncertain costs were at the top of the list of barriers for digital transformation.

But it needn’t be that way.

Streamlining and Automating

Digital Transformation promises a wealth of tantalising benefits yet is often seen as an “all or nothing” endeavour, which results in the barriers mentioned above, but this is not necessarily the case. Successful implementation of Digital Transformation can begin small, by identifying frequently occurring problems or inefficiencies, and finding technologies that solve them.

By way of example, in a recent presentation, Autodesk CIO, Prakash Kota, commented that streamlining and automation are key to preparing a business for the future. Indeed, when it comes to process automation, the best place to start is by analysing and improving the tasks you already do today.

“Streamlining and automating business and IT processes is critical to accommodating Autodesk’s rapid growth and ensuring customers and employees have a friction-free experience”, Prakash Kota, CIO at Autodesk.

Understanding that Digital Transformation is a journey, not a solution, companies can focus their first steps on improving the accuracy, quality and quantity of existing processes and procedures using techniques known as Process Automation

Engineering process automation reduces many of the barriers mentioned above by building on the company’s internal expertise and customer knowledge. Further, automation of mundane, resource-heavy tasks can lead to increased quality and precision, along with the ability to service more customers, more quickly.

In summary, through automating time-consuming, repetitive processes, engineering and design organisations can improve productivity and gain a competitive advantage.

Get Automating

Knowing that process automation can deliver these tangible bottom-line benefits whilst also freeing up valuable engineering time for more complex, higher value tasks, it would seem to be a business imperative, yet many companies still hesitate.
